Precious as a Pearl is a new Cardiff start-up. It is taking part in the enablement programme at Entrepreneurial Spark powered by NatWest. Precious as a Pearl will be at some local fairs in the coming months including Crafts at Christmas at St Donat’s at Atlantic College.

Precious as a Pearl offers jewellery with pearls as the recurring theme. All the pieces are handmade in Cardiff by Pauline Lomax, the company founder. “Being part of the Entrepreneurial Spark programme has been a very positive experience so far and the mantra #GoDo has helped me crack on and build my new website shop www.preciousasapearl.com. Working alongside other new start-ups is inspiring as it helps in a supportive and encouraging manner with lots of peer-learning and shared experiences of success and failure.”

Pauline has always loved pearls, she describes pearls ‘as the queen of gems and the gem of Queens!’  Pauline creates classic style pearl jewellery but she also enjoys combining them with other gems and stones to make something ‘a bit more colourful and funky! Pearls are having a renaissance.’

Currently, her favourite is combining lava and pearl. ‘I love the idea of the depths of the earth and the ocean! Black and white is always a winning look which goes with so much.’

The Suffragette-inspired collection is also popular, using the colours of the Suffragette movement: green, white and violet these colours represented ‘Give Women Votes!’ Each colour has a positive meaning. This collection is made from Peridot, pearl and amethyst.

Pauline started out making earrings and then had requests for other pieces.

Her daughter Nuala inspired the name. “Nuala who writes lyrics had written a song which went ‘I am no stereotypical girl, I am as precious as a pearl.’ It was a perfect fit for my creations” said Pauline.

“One of the lovely things about this business is the joy in knowing that your creations are giving pleasure to others.”
