Several weeks ago I was chatting to a few business owners in Cowbridge and they were, understandably, bemoaning Cowbridge’s lack of footfall. It was very much a doom and gloom conversation but with a genuine hope that things would pick up.
On that day, I counted at least six empty commercial properties on the High Street – this in itself would have been unheard of eight years ago when we launched Vale Life magazine – properties didn’t even make it to the estate agent (generally they were snapped up just by word of mouth).
However, times have changed, and retail life isn’t as easy in Cowbridge as it used to be. Some transport services have been cut and the loss of quite a few boutiques and other businesses has taken the shine off the market town as a shopper destination.
Having said that, this morning all has changed; Cowbridge is full of Let Agreed signs. Good news all round and, already, the impact on the psyche of existing retailers is positive. The same people have a spring in their step and all is well in the world.
Isn’t it funny how perceptions can change in a calendar month?
