Reading the piece in The Sunday Times about Amazon paying 0.1% tax on business of £4.2 billion made me wonder if I could do that (not that I’m turning over £4.2 billion).
The bottom line is Amazon isn’t doing anything wrong in legal terms. Clearly the government needs to legislate to stop this kind of thing happening. Whatever your business in Britain, you get taxed on it – simple.
Until then, perhaps all the companies in the UK could write to their local MP and government, when they come to pay their corporation tax, and remind them how much they’d be paying if they were Amazon.
And if you really want to make a statement, vote with your feet (or your credit card) and stop buying from companies like Amazon. You’ll. no doubt, be helping your local shops and businesses.
